Giuliani praises 'great president' By THOMAS BEAUMONT REGISTER STAFF WRITER Des Moines Register Cedar Rapids, Ia. - Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani said in Iowa on Friday that President Bush's response to terrorism will ensure his legacy is that of "a great president."
"He will be, I believe, a president who will be viewed by history for this one decision as being a great president," the former New York mayor told about 100 Cedar Rapids-area Republicans during a quick campaign stop in eastern Iowa. "He decided in a flash to put our country on offense against terrorism."
National public opinion polls show slightly fewer than half of Americans approve of President Bush's performance in fighting terrorism.
The issue rated high among election-year priorities with voters last fall, however.
The former mayor, closely associated with the 2001 attacks in New York City, stresses the issue as one of two pillars to his candidacy for the GOP presidential nomination.
"The very best way to deal with it, which I understand ... is for America to be on offense against terrorism and never, ever, ever go back to being on defense," Giuliani said during a 45-minute forum at a heavy equipment dealership on Cedar Rapids' north side.
Most recent public opinion polls show a small percentage of Americans consider terrorism the top issue facing the country, well behind the war in Iraq, the economy and health care.
However, a number of national polls taken before last year's elections showed terrorism rated higher as a motivating issue for voters, just behind the war and health care.
The event at Rexco Equipment, where Giuliani spoke for about 10 minutes before taking questions for about 30 minutes, was his only public event in Iowa.
Giuliani met privately with GOP activists in Cedar Rapids before the forum, and took no questions from the news media covering the forum.
Making his third trip to the leadoff caucus state as a presidential candidate, Giuliani arrived in Iowa Friday morning after participating in the first debate of the 2008 campaign Thursday in California.
Giuliani was the only candidate of the 10 at the nationally televised debate to say that it would be acceptable to keep in place Roe vs. Wade, the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision allowing abortion.
The moment underscored Giuliani's support for abortion rights, which is a deal-breaker for some conservative Iowa Republicans, who make up a healthy portion of caucus activists in the state.
Cedar Rapids Republican Bob Tribuno said Giuliani's moderate position on abortion was "disappointing," but would not keep him from considering supporting Giuliani in the caucuses.
"I'm looking for a proven leader and someone who stands on a set of values that doesn't shift in the wind," the retired engineer said. "I could accept a candidate who disagrees with me on some things, if he is a leader with principles."
Unlike his more socially conservative rivals, Giuliani stresses his commitment to reducing government spending as the policy companion to fighting terrorism.
A number of the questions from the Cedar Rapids audience of business owners, farmers and political activists focused on taxes and the economy.
Giuliani proposed making permanent the tax cuts enacted under Bush, repealing the estate tax and keeping flat the capital gains tax rate.
But the candidate's two biggest applause lines came when he reminded the group of his association with Sept. 11, 2001, and Bush's performance in its aftermath.
"He reversed years of being on defense," Giuliani said of the president. "He reversed it immediately. He put us immediately on offense, and we have been safe as a result of that. And he deserves credit for that," he said, sparking applause.

Leftist Thought Control Stifles Opposing Views
David Limbaugh
The political left, which holds itself as progressive, rational, and fact-based, is becoming an enemy of academic inquiry, and a practitioner of thought control on a wide variety of issues.
Increasingly, from the left's perspective, there is just one acceptable viewpoint.
Consider the subjects of evolution, global warming, special rights for homosexuals, and abstinence education. Consider efforts of the left to silence conservative talk radio. Consider the mainstream media's arrogant denial of its transparent liberal bias, pronouncing itself to be above politics and inherently objective and its critics somehow skewed.
Consider the leftist refrain that red-state conservatives do not merely possess a different worldview, but are not part of the "reality-based community." Consider the near monolithic liberalism and secularism of our university faculties.
The U.S. House is expected to pass a landmark federal law that would expand hate crimes legislation to include attacks against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender citizens. Opponents argue that it's conceivable under the bill that if a rabbi, priest, or pastor reads to his congregation a passage from the Bible condemning homosexuality, he could be considered an accomplice to any parishioner who later commits a "hate crime" against a homosexual.
Various activists are behind legislation that would prohibit public schools from continuing to teach Abstinence Until Marriage (AUM) in North Carolina and would force them to teach comprehensive sex education.
In my book "Persecution" I described the trials of a university professor who was disciplined for making available, but not mandating, materials in her class that deviated from the dogma of homosexual activists. One school administrator, in defending the school's chilling action said, "We cannot tolerate the intolerable."
Global warming alarmists tell us there is an overwhelming consensus on the issue and further debate is pointless. Yet there are a significant number of genuine dissenters in the relevant disciplines.
Many more would doubtlessly emerge from the closet but for the potential financial consequences that might ensue. Plus, many of those counted as experts by the alarmists are scientists with no appreciable expertise in the field.
Despite arguably insufficient data and questionable techniques to measure climate change historically, not to mention questions concerning the extent of man-made warming, the global warming zealots brook no dissent. They ridicule and castigate anyone, including those every bit as credentialed as they are, who refuses to imbibe their Kool-Aid.
Their uncompromising certainty demonstrates staggering hubris, especially considering the track record of many scientists who have issued unequivocal conclusions, for example, in the health field, only to retract them a few short years later.
By pronouncing an end to debate — just because they say so — they betray the very principles they claim to uphold: an adherence to scientific inquiry and a commitment to facts and reason in favor of ideologically and politically driven conclusions.
Tom Bethell, in his "Politically Incorrect Guide to Science," quotes author Michael Crichton as saying that consensus science "is an extremely pernicious development that ought to be stopped cold in its tracks. Historically, the claim of consensus has been the first refuge of scoundrels; it is a way to avoid debate by claiming that the matter is already settled. Whenever you hear the consensus of scientists agrees on something or other, reach for your wallet, because you're being had."
We are witnessing a similar phenomenon on the subject of evolution versus intelligent design. Evolutionist Richard Dawkins, explains Bethel, believes that evolution is not a debatable topic. "I'm concerned about implying that there is some sort of scientific argument going on," said Dawkins. "There's not." Meanwhile the intelligent design movement is gathering courageous and impressive adherents who would debate the notion that no debate is going on.
But when these recalcitrant upstarts refuse to toe the line, they sometimes pay the price.
Bethell tells of the publication by the peer-reviewed "Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington" of an article on the Cambrian Explosion by the Discovery Institute's Steven Meyer. Though Meyer relied on the work of respected scientists in the article, its subject matter did not sit well with the "consensus" gods.
Richard Stenberg, the editor of the journal, was virtually accused of being a religious fundamentalist and a right-winger for publishing the piece. He was required to "surrender his office and keys to the department floor, denying him access to the specimen collections he needed." And, according to Bethel, "A senior Smithsonian scientist complained that publication of the article 'made us into the laughing stock of the world, even is this kind of rubbish sells well in backwoods USA.'"
"Notice," wrote Bethel, "it was not the substantive claims about the Cambrian Explosion that caused such fury, it was their publication in a peer-reviewed journal."
If this trend continues, it's hard to imagine what we'll see in next decade. How the left can consider itself fair and open-minded in view of such developments is beyond comprehension. Fred Thompson's Non-Campaign Rolls On Actor And Former Senator Explains Why He Could Be President, But Won't Commit To Running
(CBS/AP) Fred Thompson isn't officially in the race for the Republican nomination yet, but the former Tennessee Senator and "Law & Order" star is sounding a lot like a candidate.
"If I didn't think I could win in November I wouldn't think about it," Thomspon said in an interview with Scott Baker for Breitbart.tv.
Thompson said he "had some thoughts" about when he might officially jump into the crowded field of Republican candidates, but he said he wasn't "ready to talk about that too much."
But, if he commits to running for president, Thompson said he will not do it halfway.
"I'm not interested in winning a primary and losing in November," he said in the Breitbart.tv interview. "I'm not interested in being the tallest midget in the room."
When asked about the Republicans who would be his competitors, Thompson would not go on the attack.
"Some of them I know very well, some of them I don't know well at all," he told Baker. "So I'm not going to pass judgment on them at all."
The former Senator did offer an example of what he thought voters were looking for in a candidate and weren't finding in Washington. Thompson also said voters might find what they were looking for in him.
"I think people are looking for someone that talks straight to them and deliver the news to them whether it's good or bad," Thompson said. "That's what I hope I bring to bear when people think of me in that context."
On one issue, Thompson seems to be in lockstep with the other Republicans in the presidential field.
Like the 10 leading Republican contenders did in a televised debate on Thursday, Thompson has argued against leaving Iraq unless stability is restored. He noted that even when the U.S. leaves Iraq, the world still will be full of danger.
Thompson, speaking Friday night to the Lincoln Club of Orange County in California, sketched a broad agenda that hewed to Reaganesque themes — a strong military, a limited federal government and robust free markets.
Thompson also warned that people in the United States must be prepared to sacrifice in a world threatened by terrorism and hostile governments.
"Every generation has made sure that it did its part to make sure that it did endure, with the sacrifices they made. And now it's our turn," Thompson said.
Editor's note: Fred Thompson is the only guy who can truly re-energize the Conservative base while bringing over middle-of-the-roaders. Though it is, admittedly, very frustrating that fred is holding off on an announcement, it is looking more and more likely that he will eventually jump in the race. It should be encouraging to know that Thompson is a fighter and the leftists and the media will not bludgeon him like they have done with Bush. When Thompson gets in, he becomes the instant favorite, not just for the nomination, but for the General election as well.Labels: A Newt One, American Truth warriors, Blog talk radio, Checkmate, Conservative, Darter45, Fred Thompson, Jimmy Carter, Jimmy Z, Patriots for Conservative values, Politics, SonlitKnight, The Truth Surge
