When you really think about it, is the idea of a Happy Memorial day really such a good thing?
Oh, don't get me wrong, I am as guilty as the next guy.
When you talk of Memorial day, I think of grilling steaks and playing volleyball in the front yard, with a radio blaring live coverage of the Indianapolis 500 and Coca Cola 600.
This year will be no different.
Yet, Hot dogs and Lemonade and Volleyball, parades and the growl of 700 horsepower engines, and an extra day off is not what this weekend is about. It is about a special kind of human being.
It is about a human being that cherishes justice and freedom and democracy so much that he would rather risk his own life than sit idly by and watch an innocent person languish under the hard hand of totalitarianism
While we run around our yards chasing our kids, or relax on the hammock with a glass of lemonade, The honored men and women in uniform, toil under the heat of places like Iraq and Afghanistan, fighting the most evil and barbaric enemy our nation has ever faced, and bringing hope and freedom to tens of millions of the world's long suffering.
As Democrat Zell Miller put it, in 2004-
"Never, in human history, has someone given more, for the benefit of
total strangers, than the American soldier"
Yet, despite that, we face an insidious enemy here at home and many good intenioned folks believe that those very soldiers are fighting and dying so that Liberals at home have the right to insult them, trash them, lie about them, slander them, and work, relentlessly, toward their defeat.
These folks are wrong. They confuse freedom with license. A civilized society can not long live without the former, nor with the latter. Freedom is the ability to do that which you ought to do, license is the ability to do anything you want to do. Though often confused, these two principles cannot co-exist.
When one person does whatever he wishes, he does so at the expense of another. It is the notion of Liberals that anyone who is a member of their tribe can do or say anything to anyone, at anytime, in any place, for any reason. Strangely, this freedom is reserved only for leftwingers.
It is my opinion that sedition laws be brought back and enforced, and Memorial day be celebrated by the high profile hangings of more than a few liberal traitors.
Then we can munch down hot dogs and watch the race.
