INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Representative Julia Carson, the first black person and first woman to represent Indianapolis in Congress, died Saturday, a family spokeswoman said. She was 69.

Ms. Carson died after a battle with lung cancer, said the spokeswoman, Vanessa Summer.
