From UN Watch:
As Israel struggles to defend its civilians from deadly Hamas rocket attacks - 200 in the past few days alone, averaging nearly one per hour - the Arab and Islamic states, represented by Syria and Pakistan, have called an emergency "Special Session" of the UN Human Rights Council for this Wednesday, January 23, 2008.The proposed resolution would condemn Israel yet say nothing about the Hamas attacks. This inverts the simple reality whereby Hamas and its terrorist allies are deliberately targeting civilians, while Israel in its defensive measures takes pains to avoid harming civilians.
Morally, Canada and the European Union countries are among the most important members of the 47-nation council, and it is vital that they register their opposition.
Here is the text of the resulting email message sent to several world leaders.
I write to you concerning the Special Session of the UN Human Rights Council that has been convened for this Wednesday, January 23, 2008, the purpose of which is to condemn Israel's attempt to defend its citizens from Hamas rocket attacks.
As you know, the meeting was initiated on Friday afternoon by Syria and Pakistan on behalf of the Arab and Islamic states. Other signatories to the request include China, Cuba, Egypt, Nigeria, Pakistan, Russia and Saudi Arabia. We find it objectionable that serial human rights violators continue to cynically abuse the UN system to attack democracies.
The draft resolution circulated by the Palestinians is entirely one-sided. It accuses Israel of "grave breaches" of human rights, and of "incessant and repeated military attacks and incursions." However, it makes not a single reference to the rocket attacks by Hamas and other terrorist groups that, daily and deliberately, target 30,000 Israeli civilians living in border towns such as Sderot. In the past few weeks, more than 450 rockets and mortars have been launched -- 200 in the past few days alone, averaging nearly one per hour. Yet all of this is omitted.
As an act of peace and conciliation, Israel withdrew completely from the Gaza Strip in September 2005. It was a chance for Palestinians to build their future. Instead, they voted for a terrorist organization that has overseen the firing of over 4,000 rockets and mortars from those same areas. The terrorists deliberately fire at Israeli civilians -- and do so from populated Palestinian areas to use their own civilians as human shields. These are the real war crimes.
As a constructive member of the Human Rights Council, please vote against this resolution -- a text designed to strengthen the forces of hate, intolerance and terror -- thereby supporting the values of peace, democracy and human rights.
A decent respect for morality & common sense demands that we take action. The petition for Withdrawal from the U.N. has only 20 signatures. Why? Don't you give a damn? Everyone should be endorsing that petition and exhorting everyone they can influence to endorse it. Ben 01/21/08
