...It just may be the winning strategy.......or is it?
Give him credit, this Obama guy is proving to be a shrewd tactician, even as his associations and ideas leave much to be desired. Last week, he threw a major curve ball when he refused to join the chorus of voices calling for Hillary to drop from the race.
Now, with a shrinking Clinton advantage in Pennsylvania, Obama is now treating his nomination as a fait accompli. He has even been floating trial balloons on prospective VP choices (VA Senator Jim Webb and Ohio Governor Ted Strickland among the top choices).
The strategy, apparently, is to force Hillary out of the race in a practical sense, rather than an actual sense. Forcing her out of the race would be accomplished by forcing her out of the discussion.
It just may be his best strategy. Not a winning strategy, mind you, but the best one he can muster.....or is it?
The problem is that, In the end, Hillary isn't going to go away quietly.....and she isn't going to go away empty handed. There has not been, in my lifetime, an American candidate more visibly drunk with raw power lust. It's frightening actually. She has made it clear that she will burn down the Presidency before willingly surrendering it to Obama.
The Democrats are genuinely afraid of her and are truly paralyzed at the prospect of incurring her fierce wrath. She will have to be appeased. Throwing a virgin down a volcano...well, they just don't do that anymore.
Many believed that making her the VP choice would be the solution but that is no longer feasible. Her negatives are approaching 60% and they fear she would doom the ticket. A backroom deal will have to be struck that gives her a big prize.
Senate Majority Leader, perhaps?
After all, Harry Reid has given the party a wimpish look. Hillary could step in and butch it up a bit, couldn't she? Could Hillary be satisfied as Majority Leader?
Of course not! We all know what Hillary would do! Upon learning that she was going to be the new Majority leader, she would summon all the stealth and evil forces, of her vast political destruction empire, to doom the Obama ticket so that She might use the leader's position as a springboard to 2012.
Hey! How about a cabinet position!? That way, Hillary has a stake in seeing Obama win in 2008, while preserving her chance to run again in 2016!!! Yes! Yes! That's the solution!
Oh wait......
Hillary will be 69 in 2016 and imagining what she will look and sound like at 69 is just brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Plus, does she really want to square off against a still relatively youthful Webb, with (she would presume) 8 years of VP experience?
No, no no...... you just don't know Hillary. She is the Veruca Salt of politics. She wants the world, She wants the whole world and She wants it now! Hillary knows that all that stands between her and the nomination are roughly 300 uncommitted Super Delegates who know there will be, as the late Barbara Olsen put it, Hell to Pay if they cross her.
