~Snooper~
A sad state affairs this indictment is:[...] Israel's monumental achievement, the fact that this tiny country with its neighbors hell-bent on eliminating it has somehow managed to survive, does not seem to be much of a story. Some would say this is appropriate. Israel is, after all, a Jewish state. Why should anyone else care? [...]That was from an article today in the New York Post penned by Rabbi Shmuley Boteach. Jimmy Carter certainly doesn't care. I care. The Rabbi stated that he hasn't seen much written of this Milestone except in Jewish Publications. Well, here is a list, all in the New York Post. He really should pay more attention.
Israel will soon turn 60 and we at A Newt One say, "Happy Anniversary Israel". May you have many more.
A TINY COMMENTARY ON VICTIMHOOD
Israel's independence day is called the Nakba, or "day of catastrophe," by the Palestinians. There are fears this year - as most every year - that there will be violence surrounding the anniversary. Hamas supporters in the Gaza Strip have already rolled out their secret weapon: A midget. [...]BIRTH OF A NATION ( a NY Post headline from years ago)
May 4, 2008 -- From The Post's editorial of May 15, 1948: Israel is reborn after 20 centuries. [...]BOOK OF EXODUS
[...] In 1947, a ship named Exodus left France bound for the promised land, carrying more than 4,500 Holocaust survivors. It was one of many ships delivering Jews seeking sanctuary after the cruelties of Nazi Germany. The British, still unsure what to do with their Mandate over the Palestine region, turned the Exodus back, sending the refugees to an old Nazi camp near Hamburg. Outraged by the move, international opinion was swayed toward giving Jews their homeland, leading to the UN partition of the land between Jews and Arabs in November 1947. Israel's declaration of independence followed a few months later. [...]BOOK OF GENESIS
[...] On May 20, 1948 - six days after the Jewish State of Israel declared independence - Syrian troops attacked the nation's oldest communal settlement, or kibbutz, Degania. The Syrians had eight tanks and 10 armored cars. The settlers had homemade machine guns and some bombs. [...]EXALTATION WITHOUT JOY
If Mark Twain, no stranger to the Holy Land, were alive today, he might say about Israel six decades after its creation what he said once of himself, "reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated." As Israel turns 60, it does so as an extraordinarily resilient nation that has long defied the odds, conventional wisdom, and its enemies. With a GDP last year of $132.5 billion, a per capita income of $28,800, and an integrated, high-tech globalized economy that would make larger nations blush, Israel has not only managed to survive, but to prosper. [...]ISRAEL'S GIFT TO THE WORLD
As Israel celebrates its 60th birthday, the world should recognize the enormous gifts the Jewish state has given the world. Israel has exported more lifesaving medical technology to the far-flung corners of the earth than any nation of comparable size. It has done more to protect the environment, to promote literature, music, the arts and sciences, to spread agricultural advances and to fight terrorism within the rule of law. [...]MIRACULOUS MILESTONE
[...] That the State of Israel even came into being is astounding; that, in the six decades since, it has not only survived but evolved into a modern, thriving, vital nation is a testament to the vision and single-minded dedication of its founders, its leaders and its everyday citizens. [END]Israel has been a model success such as our own nation and the enemies within are the same, founded on jealousy, greed and stupidity.
