WHAT THE HELL? This from the New York Times this morning [emphasis mine]:
The Human Toll of a Building Binge
By Jim Dwyer
Once again, death by crane has come to the East Side of Manhattan. As stadiums are built, a new subway line is dug and office towers soar, one anonymous apartment house development on 91st Street has provided another flash look at the vulnerability of life in a crowded city. While people across the street were getting ready for work on Friday morning, a crane fell and ripped open their homes.
This, it appears, is the cost of a boom.
For the last three or four years, the amount of money spent on construction in New York City has grown by 18 percent annually, according to the New York Building Congress; it will be more than $30 billion this year. Major construction companies have so much work that they are booked for years to come. These are the companies that also have the biggest stake in making sure that their businesses are run safely, to avoid driving up their insurance premiums. [...]

Well it sure sound like New York City isn't part of this great recession/impending depression we keep hearing about. To hear Barack 'Crazy Ass Church Member' Nobama tell it, the country is about to fall into the worst economic times of our history.
Yet reading this piece, New York City is positively booming! Why haven't we heard this on the television news? Why isn't msnbc carrying on about the good economy in America's largest city? Never mind - I know the answer. Liberals.
And, so now all of a sudden, the crane falling means there's a 'binge' growth spurt and everyone's in danger. This is purely the typical leftist ploy of trying to instill fear in the folks, and then the next step will be a call for fewer permits and slower growth.
Nothing is ever good for left wingers. Bad news gets them VERY excited.
Accidents happen. Looking through the history of New York City, the tragedies that came with great growth and innovative construction are part of the fabric of the City. Yet, to read this article, you would think that New York City is unable to handle these accidents.
Any such accident is a terrible thing, especially where lives are lost. But to insinuate that a 'binge' (the word clearly was chosen because of its negative connotation) is causing the people of New York City to be unsafe is simply false. It is nothing but a negative spin placed by the biased anti-growth liberal writer in order to make people fearful - and that's what democrats and liberals do.
If anything, this story should tell us that the liberal-run safety monitoring departments, and their field inspectors, cannot be trusted. --Jimmy Z |
