The story line for McCain just keeps getting bleaker and bleaker. Minnesota, Michigan and Iowa now put him in deficits of 18, 8 and 7 points. These would be "battleground" states are turning solid blue.

Worse than that, the solidly red states are the New Battlegrounds. South Dakota now has McCain's lead down to 4 points. South Dakota joins North Dakota, Montana, Virginia, Ohio, Colorado, Iowa, New Mexico, Nevada and North Carolina as 2004 Bush states where McCain is in trouble.

McCain supporters continue to be optimistic of a victory. For the life of me, I don't know what they are looking at.
